Living Room Before

Breakfast Nook Before 

This 1980’s ranch-style home needed a little TLC when we arrived. It seems like nothing had been maintained or updated in about 30 years. However, one of the focal points of the house was the beautiful tropical backyard that could be seen from the living room and kitchen. It also had the original fireplace. The house itself was dingy and dark. New paint, flooring and a more aesthetically pleasing fireplace were a must.

Tile was replaced with a wood laminate throughout the main floor, making the space feel bigger and updated. A lighter greige wall color (Sherwin Williams Agreeable Gray) was used to paint the walls. I kept the chair rail in the breakfast nook to complement the cottage-style kitchen I would be designing for. All the lighting was replaced with can lights, and a new cottage-style pendant light was added in the kitchen. Taking out the oversized fan and replacing it with a new beautiful semi-flushed light made the ceiling height feel not so low.

I wanted to lighten up the fireplace, but instead of just painting the brick white I used Romabio Paints to paint the brick and give it a more vintage feel. I then hired a carpenter to build a hallow mantel that could be placed over the existing brick mantel. By doing this, it was much less expensive than ripping the brick off, where you could also run into the chance of breaking the mortar on the inside of the fireplace which would be very damaging. 

Last, I updated the outdated stair rail by taking off the wooden handrail and powder coating the metal baluster and rail that was beneath it. I coordinated the stain on the fireplace mantle beam to the handrail.

Once all the remodeling elements were complete I added furniture with similar undertones as the floor and walls to make the space feel more warm and inviting. Coupled with some complimenting accessories, I transformed this living room/ kitchen space from dingy and dark to light and airy with beautiful natural elements.
